Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. In 1959, she finished the manuscript for her Pulitzer Prize-winning best-seller To Kill a Mockingbird. The youngest of four children, she grew up as a tomboy in a small town. Her father was a lawyer, a member of the Alabama state legislature and also owned part of the local newspaper. For most of Lee's life, her mother suffered from mental illness, rarely leaving the house. It is believed that she may have had bipolar disorder. The following year, To Kill a Mockingbird won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize and several other literary awards. Horton Foote wrote a screenplay based on the book and used the same title for the 1962 film adaptation.
Racism
Racism is judging another person or race because of the color of their skin, their religion or heritage, or on their sexuality/gender.
Present- Jason Collins
On May 6, 2013, Jason Collins went publicly, on Sports Illustrated magazine, and announced that he was gay. The announcement officially came out on April 29, 2013, when Jason told the media. Jason Collins came out and spoke because he felt that it was the right time to announce it. He felt that many people are being abused by other people because of their sexuality. Many people, around the league, supported Jason. Fellow players such as Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul and even the commissioner, David Stern sent their support. President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, former president Bill Clinton, and Nike were also among those offering their praise and support.
This event displays racism because not everyone agreed with the point of view of Collins and his decision to tell people. It also displays racism because those people who disagree with Jason, such as Chris Broussard, did state their opinion, but their opinion did hurt Jason Collins. My opinion on this event is that it was good for Jason Collins to finally tell people that he is homosexual. I also don't agree with Chris Broussard's comments, he does not have to publicly tell his side and his beliefs. I am not choosing any side, but I believe that everyone, no matter what, has the right to free speech and to let their voice be heard. Yes, it could've been handled differently. Jason Collin could have not made the announcement public. Also, Chris Broussard could've kept his judgement to himself if it was going to hurt other people. Soon after this incident, Chris Broussard was suspended by the ESPN network, because he is supposed to comment on sports, not give his full insight and his personal beliefs.
