Karen Hesse was born on August 29, 1952 in Baltimore, Maryland. Karen Hesse attended and graduated from the University of Maryland. She graduated with a degree in English and minors in psychology and anthropology. Most of Karen Hesse's novels are based on historical events, such as the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. Therefore, her novels are mostly historical fiction. Some of her novels are "Wish on a Unicorn" and, of course, "Out of the Dust", which won the Newbery Medal.
