One of Billie Jo's interpersonal problems is that her friend, Libby, is leaving Texas for California. She is leaving because of the dust storms plaguing Texas. Billie Jo is now lonely because she is without her best friend. She is also problemed because she is jealous that Libby gets to leave and she doesn't.
Another problem that Billie Jo faces is that she loves to play the piano, but her mom will not let her. Her mom thinks that piano will not tak you anywhere, but school will make you prepared for life. Billie is against this because she feels relieved when she plays piano, it's like everything is at ease.
The third problem that Billie Jo is burdened about is the fact that her father, Ray, wanted a boy. Her dad tries his best to try and transform her into a boy, by doing boy things. Ray already makes it obviuos to everyone that he wanted a boy.

Billie Jo's everyday problem that is non-family related is the dust. There is a major dust storm haunting and blowing out on there home and their state, Texas. The dust is affecting their livestock and farming. Without food, there is nothing to eat for their family. The dust is so strong that it is going into their milk and forcing them to chew on milk.
