Chapter 8
Chapter 8
1.) Why does Scout quiz Atticus about his visit to the Radley house? How much does Atticus tell her?
Mrs. Radley passed away. Then, Atticus sends his condolences to the Radleys. Scout asks Atticus if she saw Arthur. Atticus tells her that he saw nothing. Scout wants to know if he say Boo.
2.) Why does Atticus save Miss Maudie’s oak rocking chair?
Atticus saves the oak rocking chair because he knows that the chair means a lot to her. It is a very sentimental possession to her.
3.) When Atticus asks Scout about the blanket around her shoulders, what does Jem realize?
Jem realizes that Boo Radley gave them the blanket. Boo could be doing this for just being kind. Boo may not be approaching them because he may not be socially interactive and he may not want any more drama.
4.) Explain what Atticus means by telling Jem not to let his discovery “inspire” him to “further glory”? Is there any reason why Jem might now do as his father says?
Their discovery was that Boo is actually alive. Atticus is reinforcing to leave Boo alone. Atticus is saying to not bother Boo Radley. Jem won't listen to his dad because, maybe, he is finally acknowledging that Boo would come out when he wants to. With the situation of the blanket, Jem might not want to listen to his dad because he knows that he is alive, and he is curious about Boo Radley and wants to try to communicate to Boo Radley.

2.) Scout and Jem have “mixed feelings” about Christmas. Explain. What are these feelings and why do they feel this way?
They both like Uncle Jack because he brings them presents and has fun with them. But they do not like the other relatives such as, Aunt Alexandra and Francis because, Francis causes problems and makes fun of them. Francis always blames his doings on people. Aunt Alexandra doesn't understand them. In her eyes, Scout is not dressed or acting like a lady. Aunt Alexandra always tells Atticus to do a better job.
3.) Uncle Jack Finch tells Scout that she is growing out of her pants. What does this mean and why might he say it?
She thinks that she is older than her real age. She is not being appropriate for her age. She is cursing and doing things that older people do.

They repeat that Atticus is being a bad parent. She tells orders and demands. She tells that men should wait on women more. She is gossiping about the people around her. She always thinks that she is right.
5.) Does Scout learn anything from overhearing Atticus’s conversation with Uncle Jack? What might this be?
It is ok that she does the things she is doing right now because she will learn from it. She will soon realize it and grow from it. He wants her to realize that he will not give attention to her for having this bad behavior.
6.) Read the final sentence of Chapter 9. Explain in your own words what it means and why it might be important in the story.

Chapter 10
1.) Scout says that “Atticus was feeble”. Do you think that this is her view as she tells the story or her view when she was younger? Why? Does she still think this after the events recorded in this chapter?
She thinks that Atticus is old and frail. She assumed that he was unable to do the things that the other dads did. She does not think of him as feeble when they find out that he was the greatest shooter in Maycomb county.
2.) In this chapter Atticus tells his children that “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird”. What reason does he give for saying this?
The reason is that mockingbirds do not do any harm to anyone. The birds just mind their own business and just sing.
3.) Near the end of this chapter Atticus cuts off Heck Tate as he is speaking to Jem. What might Heck have been about to say, and why would Atticus want to stop him from saying it?
He might tell Jem that Atticus was the deadliest shot in Maycomb. Atticus cut him off because he doesn't want to brag about it. He also does not want to be known for anything, he is very humble.
4.) Jem and Scout have different views about telling people at school how well Atticus can shoot. Explain this difference. Which view is closer to your own? Explain.
Jem tells Scout to leave it alone and not to tell anyone. Scout wants to tell everyone that his dad is the deadliest. I would tell almost everyone because I do not want to brag about it, and maybe some people might feel jealous.

1.) Why does Aunt Alexandra come to stay with Atticus and his family? What is she like?
Aunt Alexandra is a bossy and and mean lady. She does not acknowledge other people as human. She treats them smaller because she is related to the owner and because of the racism of white and black people.
2.) Read the first two things Alexandra says when she comes to the finch house. Provide a quote. Are these typical of her or not? Explain.
"Put my bags in the front bedroom, Calprunia." "Stop scratching your head." These are not typical because she is not being respectful to Calpurnia because she is black and because she is their servant.
3.) What are Aunt Alexandra’s ideas about breeding and family? Why does Atticus tell them to forget it? Who do you think is right?
She defines breeding as gentle breeding. Breeding would be similar to the caste system of the past. Being a Finch means that they have a respectful figure in the town.

Chapter 14
1.) Why does Alexandra think Atticus should dismiss Calpurnia? How does Atticus respond to the suggestion?
She is jealous because Calournia takes care of the children. Atticus knows that this is still his family and that she just came into the house and she can't just butt into every problem.
2.) Why is Scout pleased when Jem fights her back? Why is she less pleased when he tells Atticus about Dill?
They are still both equal. They fight because Jem thinks that he is the boss. It was because Jem is acting of the power. If he was truly the one in charge, then he wouldn't have to fight with his younger sister. They are still both equals. He is betraying the friendship that they have established.
3.) What do we learn from Dill’s account of his running away?
We learn that Dill is spoiled without love. They give him everything but they don't treat him with love. They don't care about him. A comparison is Boo Radley. Boo might be scared to run away. Boo doesn't have anywhere to run off to.
