About the Author: Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899. His father, Clarence, was a physician, and his mother, Grace, was a former opera performer. The family of three lived in the upscale Chicago suburbs of Oak Park, Illinois. Later in his life, he was married to four different women, and had three sons. He received a Pulitzer Prize in fiction in 1953, and a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Ernest had many experiences being an ambulance driver for World War l. He was also a journalist for the Spanish Civil War. He also spent most of his time, traveling around the world, that was where he gathered ideas. He had a major alcohol problem, he had major issues, he would drink beer for breakfast. He started getting paranoid and commited suicide and died on July 2, 1961. Hemingway left behind an impressive body of work and an iconic style that still influences writers today. His personality and constant pursuit of adventure loomed almost as large as his creative talent.

Why did the Old Man go after the big fish?
The Old Man went after the big fish for respect. He went after the fish for respect because the other fishermen made fun of him because he was old and should retire. The other fishermen made fun of the Old Man, but the Old Man still went after his dreams. He wanted to prove the other people wrong. He also wanted to show them that he can still fish.

Baseball is important to Santiago because it was like his hobby. It was favorite thing to watch during his pastime. His favorite team to follow was the New York Yankees, and his favorite player to watch that always excited him was Joe DiMaggio. Joe DiMaggio was a baseball great, he broke records and received many awards. No wonder people, like Santiago, look up to Joe. He was an American icon, and he also had a tremendous career on the field and also a star-studded life. Joe DiMaggio is an American icon, baseball legend, and even a celebrity. Symbolism-the lions
What does the lions symbolize? Why lions?
The lions symbolize the dreams of Santiago. It also symbolizes his youth, when he couldn't catch a fish. Importantly, the dream of the lions just symbolize his memories. Santiago dreamt of lions because they are majestic yet strong and fierce animals. They symbolize strength and courage. They are also known as the King of the Jungle. "When I was your age I was before the mast on a square rigged ship that ran to Africa and I've seen lions on the beaches in the evening." (P.50)

Setting
Setting is the surrounding/environment and time of story it takes place in. “The Old Man and The Sea” takes place on the ocean in Havana, Cuba in the year of 1940. The importance of understanding setting is we know where the characters are at during an event; for instance, “They sat on the Terrace and many of the fishermen made fun of the old man and he was not angry.” (Pg. 15) In addition, we know that the characters are currently in the terrace which happens to be the setting. Also importantly, the setting helps the reader to have a better understanding and concrete image of the background better. The story takes place in the 1940s; for example, “I would like to take the great DiMaggio fishing,’ the old man said.” (Pg. 31) Additionally, DiMaggio was famous in that time, and DiMaggio was well known in the 1900s. In conclusion, the setting can affect the story’s development because the Gulf of Mexico’s ocean may provide different types of sea creatures than other oceans.
Allusion
Allusion is an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference.

The Yankees are Santiagos favorite baseball team. He follows the team and knows everything about and everything the team is doing. Santiago religiously keeps track of the events and happenings of the team and its players.

Out of all of Santiagos favorite baseball players, Joe Dimaggio was his most favorite. He loved watching Joe DiMaggio play baseball. No matter what Joe did on and off the court, Santiago would not judge and will still follow him. Santiago became a disciple of Joe DiMaggio.
