Chapter 19
1. Tom Robinson passes by the house to get to the farm everyday for work. Tom Robinson has visited the home before to fix numerous things. Tom says that he passed by because Mayella wanted him to fix something in the house.
2. Nobody in the house helps her. She has six children, along with her husband, and no mom. She also has no friends. She does not have a social life. She is excluded from everyone else.
3. No one cares about Mayella. The dad does not care because he didn't call for a doctor. He called for the police. At the house, she takes care of children that are not her own. While during the day, Bob uses all of his money for drinking and alcohol. Mayella is accused because she is associated with her dad and the Ewells. People are assuming that all the Ewells are the same. Society is under the impression that all Ewells are trash.
4. Atticus is polite with Mayella. It gets to the point that he is so kind that she thinks that he is making fun of her, because she is not used to people being kind to her. He also waits patiently for her to cry. He treats her with respect and dignity. He is caring towards her and the situation. Atticus has empathy for Mayella because either way she looses. Mr. Gilmer is disrespectful towards Tom. He always sneers and rolls his eyes. He always calls him "boy." He is very condescending. He treats him lowly and with no respect. He thinks that Tom is lying because he racist. He cares less because he is racist. Mr. Gilmer is is pointing out that he is black and he did it.
5. Tom says that he feels sorry for Mayella. This is wrong because he gives the impression that he has a better life than a white person. No one should feel sorry for white people. To Tom he doesn't care about the skin color. She shows empathy towards Mayella and her life. Now the jury will think that Tom thinks that he is better than everybody.
6. Dill does not like the way Mr. Gilmer is treating Tom. He doesn't like the fact that Mr. Gilmer is being verbally abusive towards Tom. Little kids don't think of anything. All they know is the difference between right and wrong. Older people lose those skills because of the way they are trained. He just cares that someone is being mean to Tom and that it is wrong.
Chapter 20
1. Prior to this trial, Raymond is the one drinking all around town. He always hangs out with black people. Dolphus married a black woman. He could be faking everything that he does. Dolphus Raymond is smart because he does the right thing. He treats black people the same as everyone else. A person is a person.
2. He makes people think that he is drinking alcohol. It gives people the reason to understand his behavior. It makes other people mind their own business and leave Raymond alone.
3. She tempted a black man. She broke the code of society by kissing someone out of her own race.
4. People are not born equal. Some have more opportunities than others. The court of law makes it equal. In court we should be treated equal and do the right thing for justice.
Chapter 21
1. He is thinking that Tom Robinson will not be guilty. Atticus holds back on his choice because he doesn't want to be disappointed.
2. It takes really long for the jury to reach a verdict. It takes longer than 5 minutes. The verdict is predictable because of racism at that time. It wasn't predictable because Atticus is a better lawyer and has more intriguing information.
3. To show respect towards Atticus. That even though they didn't win, he did a great job defending Tom Robinson.
Chapter 22
1. He wants to be a role model and defend the case. He also knows that Jem is growing up. He wants Jem to know the real world and know how to handle it.
2. He thinks it is bad because they lost. Miss Maudie says that there still might be hope for their case. The black people of the community came together and appreciated Tom Robinson.
Chapter 23
1. It shredded his last bit of credibility. It saved him from beating up one of the kids of Mayella, then it was worth it. He had to make a comeback towards Atticus.
2. It is based on circumstances. There were no eyewitnesses to the scenes. So without anyone seeing, everything is based on their own opinions.
3. Mr. Cunningham is defending Tom Robinson which forces the jury to take time and deliberate. They think of dropping the charges. He presents good evidence.
4. They are not good because they are not in the top. She sees them as being beneath her. Therefore, they are trash because they are not higher than they are or on the same level.
5. Maybe Boo Radley is not actually tied up or caged. Maybe he just wants to stay inside, because people in his town are cruel. The people in his town judges him and think of him as being strange.
Chapter 24
1. The Mrunas are black people, so no one should come near them. J. Grimmes Everett comes near the tribe to help the. They think that the tribe is sinful people. They do this to help J. Grimes Everett and because to have more appearances. These ladies are fake and they think that these are what Christians do.
2. These ladies are supposed to be talking about the church, instead they are gossiping and not talking about people in a nice way. Scout likes men better because women are hypocrites. They think that the people in Birmingham are ridiculous because they are free. They think that it is ok for our town to have slaves. They also have pity for the people in Africa.
3. He is running towards the fence to escape. The guards gave warnings shot to give a warning to come back. Instead, when he was on top of the fence, the guards shoot him 17 times. If Tom had two good arms, he would have escaped. He lost hope in the white people, he figured that he should just help him. He knows he's gonna get beaten up in jail.
4. She is sad and compassionate towards Tom and his family. She feels sad and sympathetic towards the family who will be without Tom. She is also angry because the town is making her brother the messenger. She is worried about his health. They are too cowardly to do their own. She doesn't think that Atticus should be the spokesperson for equal rights and justice. They both agree on equal rights of white and black people.
5. She shows respect for Aunt Alexandra. She picks up the tray and acts mannerly and respectfully. She is learning what it is to be a "lady."
Chapter 25
1. The people were curious. They were just curious. They were not surprised because they think that it is typical of a black man to run away. They are not sympathetic or mourning.
2. The black people run away, run away from justice. It is a stereotype being a lazy black person of society. The town is not surprised because they already do think lowly of the black people.
3. They already have their opinions. The opinion is still there, even without the facts and all the information and evidence.
4. They do not want to burden their father. Their father already has a lot to worry about. The kids do not want to add on. They are protecting their father.
Chapter 26
1. They find it disgusting and revolting that Hitler persecutes the Jews. But at home, they think it is ok to persecute the blacks. They are hypocrites for thinking so.
2. She wants to keep black people down. She doesn't want them to rise up. But in class, she feels bad for the Jews for being persecuted.
3. Reminds Jem about losing the case of Tom Robinson. It upset him because he doesn't understand how they lost. He doesn't understand why things are the way they are. He is confused. You can not explain what other people do. You cannot control their actions. She has to accept these things, as does Jem, and move on.
Chapter 27
1. He breaks through the back door. The screen door in the back is split into two. Everyone goes to the central part which is through the back. He broke into Judge Taylor's house. He verbally assaults Helen Robinson. He stalks her on her way to work. He losses his job for laziness. He finds anyone that hurt him, he wants revenge. Judge Taylor allowed the court case to proceed. He threatens Bob because he is lower. He attacks Helen because she is the wife of Tom Robinson.
2. Bob holds a grudge because he thought that the town will think of him as a hero. He thought that the town will think that he is a hero because he killed a black man. But it is the opposite, they think of him as a drunk and a racist person.
Chapter 28
1. Jem's arm is broken. It takes it all of this time of the book to explain the backstory of the broken arm of Jem's. We all believe that Bob Ewell was the one who did this.
2. The costume protected her from the attack. She uses her senses to feel and hear things all around. The fourth person around could be Boo Radley.
3. Atticus knows more than her at this moment. He knows how awkward and uncomfortable for Boo to be in this situation. He knows to give people their space. The stranger might be Boo Radley.

1. Mrs. Crenshaw was the one who created the costume. Mrs. Crenshaw put a shiny paint on the costume.
2. He was crazy. He was always drunk always around town. He had a crazy mind that would kill children.
3. He gives the reason that he is very crazy and insane and capable to kill someone.
4. Boo Radley is the stranger because he always watches them and protects the children. He gave them gifts of the dolls and the fishing wire. It is not surprising that Boo was the one who saved them because he always follows them and looks out for them.
Chapter 30
1. Atticus thinks that Jem was the one that stabbed Bob Ewell and killed him. He thinks that he was defending Scout and picked up the knife.
2. He wants to protect Jem from the town. He thinks that Jem is too young to go through all of this in court. He is also protecting Boo from the town. He knows that Boo is not into these things. He does not want to put him in a position that makes Boo uncomfortable.
3. Yes, he is protecting Boo's privacy. He knows that Boo is uncomfortable with the town coming near him. His job is the sheriff, he is supposed to protect people. At the end of the day, Bob is dead, and somehow this news will reach the town and cause gossip. He doesn't want anyone in the town to think negatively of the family and Jem. He is being kind and generous from his instinct.
Chapter 31
1. It all explains how he broke his arm. It's the build up of the events leading up to the reason. The rising action and falling action help to develop.
2. She sees things differently. She sees everything through the view of Boo. Boo has taken care of the children by giving them gifts and protecting them. Know she sees that the neighbors are treating Boo with disrespect.
3. Boo is caring and protective. He helps the children and saves them. He is also very quiet and shy. He always stays indoors. He is not crazy, the rumors are untrue. He is a little strange because he is a grown man who is afraid to walk home in the night. The story does not prepare for the end of the story. Scout decides for herself that Boo is a good person. Even though he gossips about Boo, she finds out that he is a good person.
